SUNDAYS WITH SHARON –The World Keeps Spinning Around

SUNDAYS WITH SHARON

The World Keeps Spinning Around

I’ve told the story how, when I was about 3 or 4, my mother and father moved into a big house in Oakland (the McArthur freeway took the house when it was built), that was ½ acre, but seemed like a whole city block to me. The two-story house had two bedrooms downstairs, where my mom and dad and little brother slept. Upstairs were three other bedrooms and two side attic doors, where I used to worry demons lived. Later we would take on boarders to fill the two gabled bedrooms that looked over the busy street, but my bedroom was at the back and overlooked my mother’s beautiful garden. The view from my writing desk will some day resemble this, as the hill was filled with hydrangeas, roses and lush flowering plants and filled the entire glass pane of the windows there.

I had a bunk bed, and liked to take turns sleeping on the top bunk and then the bottom. At the bottom I would make a fort with other blankets, or sheer nightgowns I’d steal from my mother’s room. I pretended I was in a harem many long afternoons. The view of the green foliage was huge from the lower bunk.

The top bunk gave me sRCA 45EY26-1ort of a sense of security, as I could look down on everything and feel I guess a little safer from pirates or gremlins or other such things as might frequent the attic spaces. One of the things I’d look down on would be the little table in the middle of the room that held my record player.

I think I was 3 when I was given this RCA record player, along with some sets of .45 records, Snow White and Cinderella being my favorites. I liked Snow White because of the handsome prince that awoke her from the witches curse. Cinderella I related to because I was alone up in the top part of the house, and I could easily feel how Cinderella used to sit and dream about her Prince Charming coming to rescue her.

cinderella

disksI was given other books as well, including some Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales, and other Mother Goose things, Little Red Riding Hood and The Gingerbred Man. When I was to turn the page, there would be some sign, like little Gus the mouse saying “Gus Gus Gus Gus Gus,” for Cinderella.

I was told by my father to only touch the little red button, only put 3 or 4 records on the turnstile, and only then to adjust the volume button on the side. I think my Little Red Riding Hood records were bright red, others were turquoise, but most of them were standard black .45s.

It didn’t matter how many times I played these albums and listened to the narration, I would cry at all the right places, and get angry with others, or jump for joy. I think I became addicted to romance and the Happily Ever After way back then when I was 3. The beauty of the spoken word or a story I loved came to me and filled me with wonder, hope and the clear sense of a beautiful, loving destiny. I just knew the Happily Ever After was going to be my story some day.

These are cherished moments. My storyteller and favorite pirate prince, J.D. Hart, send me this YouTube video of the exact copy of my record player. Listen and enjoy. And then listen to his narration, my grownup version of that little attic room, where I get to don my headsets, listen, cry at the sad parts and jump for joy at all the happy ones, just like those days many years ago.

Except now I get to share them with you.

Sundays with Sharon: Back Home

Back Home

So good to be back home. Life is full. I’m loving the fullness of it. I’m loving the special place I get to occupy. Love the stories I get to tell.

While waiting for my new iPhone on Friday, I met a man from Hong Kong (who bought us all cappuccinos while we waited) who told us some fascinating details of his life. I met another woman who grew up in Boston. I met a couple from South Africa who happened to be touring the wine country on vacation and decided to spend one day of it waiting for a phone.

Thursday night I spoke at the Petaluma Writer’s Forum. Carolyn and Jackie took me to dinner beforehand, making me feel like a real rock star. In the audience I saw old friends and met new ones. I saw faces of people I hadn’t seen in several years, who just came out to hear me speak, which surprised me. I remember critiquing with some of them, listening to them guest read or discussing plot and story and writing journey with them. My son took some videos we’d like to use snippets of in the future.

On Friday I got a Navy SEAL coin from my friend Anne. Taking it with the Trident card she sent me to the framer’s Monday to have mounted and saved, next to the Plank I got from the Navy SEAL/UDT Museum in Florida. Can’t wait to go back there next month and say Hi. Pay homage to the souls remembered there. Cry a little, take more pictures and see what’s new, and yes, probably make another donation.

Saturday I met with four friends in San Jose, working on a project to bring a popular writer’s course to the Bay Area. I’d not been to the Wagon Wheel Saloon before, and enjoyed the pictures of the “brothel” in the back. The coins in the case were priceless. I’ve now found a new passion when I go antiquing. Something new to go look for: brothel coins and pictures.

I’m also letting a new story take hold of me, as I finish SEAL’s Promise. This one is about an older couple, a secondchance story, about finding love after the death of a spouse. I’d gotten the idea some time ago when I discovered, by accident, an old friend of mine from college had built a new house, and I turned this into a bed and breakfast inn, relocating it to the Oregon coast. I’m not forcing this story, just writing tidbits as they come to me. Like I discussed at lunch on Saturday, I’m enjoying a little bit of a slow down to enjoy being home, and letting the stories come to me organically, instead of forcing them. Writing what I love and not worrying about anything I don’t.

Which is why I love being an Indie writer. I get to do the things I want to do. I get to let the fullness of the emotions take me away to places I don’t go on a regular basis. Actually watch TV for the first time in about 3 weeks last night. Got caught up in 4 episodes of Outlander. Okay, now I have to re-read that series. Again. Maybe I can get past book 6 this time…

Here’s a poem my heroine composed, which is how I’m kind of thinking of my hero, who is coming to me from the fog. I’m getting in touch with what he thinks and feels, what excites him, what possibilities he has in his personality. How the two of them play off each other as they fall in love. I love writing this part of a love story, how they get together. Trust me, they do get together!

Thank you for stopping by today!  I wish you all a wonderful week to come.

Sundays With Sharon: Learning New Things

Learning New Things

It’s always a tradeoff, traveling away from home. Even when I’m doing my job, meeting new readers and other writers, the time away does eat into my personal writing time. I need a cave, with great music, scented candles, “immortal” supply of ice cubes, neck and shoulder rubs and lemony shower gel. If I could just live in that cave 24/7 I’d be happy. My characters and I would get along just fine.

But that would mean I’d be writing for me, and I’m not. I’m writing for you, those that read my posts and my stories. You are the reason I have a job, and I never want to forget that. So, I go to conferences, learn and network, and come home newly invigorated and ready to tackle my writing jobs. I get to tell my stories about honorable men and the women who are worthy of their love and are lucky enough to be chosen by them as life partners.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="576"] Networking![/caption]

The highlight of my trip has been getting to meet my narrator, J.D. Hart and his beautiful wife, Cherokee. These people have such a loving spirit that is a rare find. I’ve gotten to see behind the scenes places in Nashville, told stories about the days of Elvis as well as other huge stars, and actually gotten to meet and shake hands with some of them. What a treat.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="255"] Me and JD Hart[/caption]

Sometimes people become fast friends when you meet them in person. I have yet to meet someone online and then meet them in person and have the friendship not only hold up, but grow. Collaborating with J.D. on the audio books has been one of the greatest joys of my writing year. Any artist who gets to share his or her work with another artist, and have them take their art and change it, make it even better through a blending of talents, is lucky. I thank my lucky stars every day I have been given this gift.

I don’t travel again for another month, and trust me when I say I’m looking forward to being home. But I have so many happy memories, stories shared and friendships started or strengthened, enough to keep me chuckling for weeks—all the way to Thanksgiving and my next big adventure. Stay tuned for that one!

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="149"] Adventures...[/caption]

I’ve chronicled some of the specific things J.D. and I have done in my post for The Realm. I think you’ll see why I have such fond memories. But I’ve also heard stories of hope, recovery from loss, business things that will help me do my job better, details about promotion, success strategies and forged alliances and friendships for future questions I don’t even know to ask.

My beautiful home in Sonoma County awaits, along with two very pampered Dobermans and the man who has been by me for the last 43 years and still calls me beautiful, my Silver Fox. I go home to the house he constructed for me, built for me so I could dream and relax and do all the crazy things I get to do every day. We get to grow old together, get to build our new bright garden together, and watch our family prosper and grow.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="404"] The Important Ones![/caption]

These and all the connections and friendships I’ve deepened and created are what’s most important in life. When I remember that, and remember to say thank you to all those who have enriched my life, like all of you, I get back ten-fold. It is truly an honor and such a joy to be your friend, your colleague, and your romance writer for life.

Sundays With Sharon: Getting Outside My Comfort Zone

sundayswsharon

Getting Outside My Comfort Zone

IMG_5048 (1)These past few days have taken me way outside my comfort zone. And there is more to come. I think of myself as a naturally very shy person, yet I did well in a competitive sales environment and became one of the top Realtors in my area. My nature was to be sweet and nice and not to “rock the boat” but I learned to become what my clients liked to call “the velvet hammer.” I like being underestimated. Thrills me when I can surprise someone with what I can do. And getting outside my comfort zone thrills me the same way.

I don’t write police procedurals or murder mysteries, but every book I write has some element of danger, or darkness, or some psychological threat, if not physical threat, to add another layer to the story, the romance. If it were up to me, I’d just write lovely sex scenes day in and day out, so I had to learn to write these other things because, believe it or not, just sex scenes is boring. It’s boring for me to read, even when it’s done well, and I think it becomes boring to the readers. What endears a reader to a writer or to the characters is the personality of the character, not just the body parts, but also the heart and soul of the character, and the circumstance they find themselves in, the story. We want to care about the character and what happens to him or her.

So, learning about blowing up things, including commercial airplanes and buildings, learning the behind the scenes parts of crime investigation, psychological profiling, SWAT and K9 techniques, guns and equipment used by good guys and bad guys, aerial surveillance techniques, these things give me fodder for my books. It might only wind up on a couple of pages of my books, but the influence will be there.IMG_5049

I’ve gotten to meet and talk to several mystery and thriller writers I would have never met had I just stayed with going to straight romance conventions. And how wonderful it was not to have to be handing out bookmarks and dog tags since promotion was non-existent. We were here for facts, and I was in those classes with seasoned crime writers with a string of NYT hits you’d recognize. I got to ask questions about workings between local jurisdictions and the FBI. Everyone was so open and willing to share. Learned how one man spent a near lifetime riding with a gang and lost the relationship with his children and wife. The cost to him was great, but he did this for us, to protect us.IMG_0932

I met some people that I know will be long-term friends, and got reacquainted with people I only see here at the conference, and others I meet at other venues. A real treat. We are all on this boat together, trying to reach some of the same readers, but so willing to share our joys and sorrows to others who truly understand the crazy process of writing.

Unlike what the public thinks, writing is a truly collaborative work, and it is painful for an introvert. A good writer is part of a community of other writers we learn from, or we are able to teach. They say you learn by teaching, and you also learn by critiquing others’ works. The association and community of writers is so important.IMG_20140906_190053 (1)

I head off today to spend a day plus with family and to hug my grandkids. I’m so grateful I get to spend time with them, that everyone is healthy and together. Then I’m off to Nashville and an experience I know I will enjoy the rest of my life. New things, outside my comfort zone. To learn, to teach, and yes, to commune with true friends and fellow travelers.

I was speaking to Liliana Hart this morning over breakfast, and we both agreed, there is nothing in this world we would rather do than write. And we both agreed, we are some of the luckiest people on the planet to be able to do so.

Thank you for following along with the journey. The lateness of this post is due to me! Been a long 3 days and I’m barely holding it all together. My brain is exploding with deets. But my heart is filled with the love of my work and the love of my many readers. Thank you for being the reason I get to do this every day. Love you.
